Assessment of a potential acquisition

Introduction

Client considering investing in a small company specialising in biologics.

Aim

Sit as a strategic partner in the decision-making process, bringing medical and scientific insight to critically review the offering.

Method

Groundwork involved a literature review pertaining to similar products, analysis of the current competition (benefits, risks, similarities, differences), interviewing potential end-users for additional insight, and a methodological review of the presentation, demonstration, and documented claims to check the pragmatic points of application.

Conclusion

Our analysis revealed that there was a fundamental issue in application of the biologic that was not directly related to the offering and therefore not immediately obvious. This issue also posed regulatory complications that would have been a significant burden on their own. We worked with the head of research and innovation to explore the implications of this concern and finally recommended that any consideration of the acquisition be ceased.
